Our most frequently asked questions

Voluntary car insurance vs. compulsory insurance?

Compulsory insurance is required by Thai law for all vehicles. It covers some basic elements, mainly injuries to occupants of the vehicle (including the driver) as well as injuries to other people caused from the usage of the vehicle. The amount of coverage is very limited.

Voluntary insurance is optional insurance.  Depending on coverage types, they may cover damage to the insured vehicle whether the driver is at fault or not, damage to the third party vehicle if the driver of the insured vehicle is at fault, liability for injuries resulting from a car accident where the driver is at fault, and the loss of or damage to the vehicle through theft, fire, or natural disasters.

Why should I have voluntary car insurance?

Accidents can happen at any time and they happen quite often in Thailand. According to the Department of Highways, there were 20,457 major and minor accidents that happened in the past year alone and the average number of collisions per day is around 50-60 times. Even though it is required by law to have compulsory insurance (often called Por Ror Bor), the coverage is quite limited. Voluntary insurance can offer additional coverage for third party property damage or damage to the insured car, and even theft and fire damage. By purchasing car insurance in Thailand, it can give you a peace of mind knowing that if anything were to happen, you would have enough funds to cover the expense and more.

How many voluntary car insurance categories are there?

  • Car Insurance Type 1: Covers damage to the insured vehicle regardless of fault in case of accident, theft, fire, and natural disasters.
  • Car Insurance Type 2+: Covers damage to the insured vehicle regardless of fault provided another identified vehicle has been involved in the accident, theft, fire, and flood. It also covers liability to third parties (property damage and bodily injury) when the driver is at fault.
  • Car Insurance Type 2: Covers damage to the insured vehicle only in case of fire and theft. And covers liability to third parties (property damage and bodily injury) when the driver is at fault.
  • Car Insurance Type 3+: Covers damage to the insured vehicle regardless of fault, provided another identified vehicle has been involved in the accident. It also covers liability to third parties (property damage and bodily injury) when the driver is at fault.
  • Car Insurance Type 3:  Only covers liability to third parties (property damage and bodily injury) when the driver is at fault.

What type of car insurance in Thailand should I choose?

Rabbit Care has some advice when it comes to choosing types of car insurance type. Please consider the following criteria to choose the type most suited for you.

Car Insurance Type 1 is required for brand new cars. However, if you would like to have the best coverage for your favorite car, consider renewing your Type 1 insurance.

If you are confident in your driving skills and the car has been in use for some time, you can switch to Type 2 or Type 2+ to save some money.

If your car is more than 7 years old or you don’t use that car very often, you might consider going for car insurance type 3 or 3+ since it will cost much less than other types.

If you are unsure about what car insurance type to choose, Rabbit Care agents are here to help guide you through the process of choosing the right policy for you.

You can directly notify Rabbit Care of your cancellation by sending us a copy of your ID card or passport (stating you want to cancel your insurance), a copy of your bank account, and the original policy (if you have already received the policy), and all documents.

The refund process will take approximately 30-45 working days after receiving all required documents.

What should I do if I have an accident and have not received my insurance policy?

Customers can claim once the policy has been approved by the insurer. Our Care Specialist will inform you about the coverage accordingly.

Why should I renew my insurance plan before the expiration date?

Oftentimes many people wait until their car insurance policy expires to get a new one. But it is more beneficial to renew your policy before expiration. To ensure continued coverage, we recommend renewing your insurance policy 1 month in advance. This way, you can make sure that your car will be insured at all times.
