In addition to the cost of treatment for COVID-19, you will also get treatment for other illnesses.

What happens if I get COVID-19 in Thailand?

Regulations surrounding COVID-19 in Thailand have relaxed. Patients with mild cases of COVID-19 are being treated like those suffering from a common cold. If you test positive for COVID-19 and have mild symptoms or are asymptomatic, Thai authorities recommend that you self-isolate for seven days. After that period, those who no longer have symptoms can go out provided they take extra precautions to ensure they do not infect others.

If you have health insurance and need medical treatment for more severe symptoms, you can receive medical treatment at a hospital and get reimbursed according to your policy.

What happens if I need medical treatment while traveling in Thailand?

Those who have purchased travel insurance in Thailand can receive medical treatment at both in-network or out-of-network hospitals. Normally for in-network hospitals, you can present the insurance policy to the hospital and there will be no advance payment required. For out-of-network hospitals, you may need to pay out of pocket first and submit a claim later. Please check your policy to find the list of in-network hospitals.

What is the claim process?

You can submit a claim form to your insurance provider through the contact channels listed in the policy, which can be mail, email, or fax. You will also need to submit documents according to the matter of claims. For example, a medical claim will require a physician’s report stating the symptoms, diagnosis and the treatment given and the original receipt of the medical bills. 

Typically, the insurance provider will pay for the reimbursement within 15 days after the receipt of completed claim form and required documents.

What if my visa application is rejected? Can I request a refund?

Normally in such cases, the travel insurance policy will be canceled with a full refund.

What is not covered by travel insurance?

There may be some exclusions in the travel insurance policy you purchase. So, it is highly recommended that you read your policy thoroughly. For example, a travel insurance policy could have medical coverage but exclude pre-existing conditions. Also, high-risk activities such as mountain climbing may not be covered and you may not be covered if you are under the influence of alcohol or addictive substances.

What is Thailand Pass?

Thailand Pass is an online registration system for foreign travelers to fill in their travel and health information such as flight details, hotel accommodation, vaccination status and insurance before arriving in Thailand. However, from 1 July 2022, Thailand Pass is no longer a requirement for entering the country.

While Thailand Pass and medical insurance covering COVID-19 is no longer required. It is still recommended for all travelers coming to Thailand to purchase travel insurance since testing positive for COVID-19 is still a possibility and it is better to be insured if something like that were to happen.

Is a Thailand Pass still required to enter Thailand?

From 1 July 2022, travelers visiting Thailand do not need to apply for a Thailand Pass before entering the country and only need a valid passport and a certificate of COVID-19 vaccination. Unvaccinated/not fully vaccinated travelers who have proof of a negative result from an RT-PCR test or professional ATK within 72 hours of travel will also be allowed entry.

Although Thailand has shifted into post-pandemic mode, thousands of people are still catching COVID-19 each day. So, it is still recommended for all travelers coming to Thailand to purchase travel insurance to prepare for unexpected circumstances.

What is the recommended medical insurance for Thailand Pass registration?
